RBM Partnership to End Malaria Board announces new composition structure

Following more than five months of consultation with partners and other key stakeholders, the RBM Partnership to End Malaria Board has announced a series of changes to the organization’s governance structure, marking a pivotal juncture for the RBM Partnership.

Following a two days consultative meeting with crucial malaria leaders representing global, regional, national, civil society, academia, and private sector held on 24-25 October 2022, during the extraordinary meeting on 25 October 2022, the Board adopted a new hybrid structure combining representational constituency-based and independent seats.

Professor Maha Taysir Barakat, Board Chair of the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, says:

The collective power of partnership is at the heart of our work at the RBM Partnership, as we continue to raise the visibility of malaria on the global agenda, catalyze action, provide countries with technical assistance, and align partners. Our new hybrid Board structure will allow us to better adapt to the changing global health landscape, while ensuring we have greater engagement and accountability to the global malaria community so that – collectively – we can end malaria for good.”

Presented to RBM partners during two partner briefing events on 9 and 10 November, the hybrid structure is expected to drive highly representative decision-making, allowing the Board to leverage critical perspectives from the global malaria community while also ensuring the Board has access to expertise and independent voices. The Board shall also ensure that at least half of its members represent malaria-affected countries at all times.

The new Board composition will reflect the following constituency groups: malaria-affected countries, key investors in the fight against malaria, civil society, the private sector, the science and research sector, the World Health Organization, and the hosting agency, currently UNOPS.

Dr Corine Karema, Interim CEO of the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, comments:

I am delighted to support introducing a new RBM Partnership Board governance structure. These positive changes will enable the RBM Partnership to benefit from a broader range of perspectives while also ensuring representation across the malaria community, particularly within malaria-affected countries. I look forward to continuing working closely with the Board to adopt these changes and accelerate efforts to end malaria once and for all!”

Over the next few months, the Board Leadership and the Interim CEO will approach constituency groups to establish processes for nominating representatives, ensuring that new Board members are appointed in time for a formal transition by the second quarter of 2023. The Board will make critical decisions regarding the governance implementation plan, and the adoption of the Bye-Laws will be reviewed in the next Board meeting on 29-30 November.

The RBM Partnership Board invites partners to share feedback on the new Board composition structure as these changes come into effect over the following months.
